Dr. Shanbhag is a renowned Ayurvedic physician, professor, researcher, author & entrepreneur. For more than 30 years, he has successfully run various businesses and institutions for promoting Ayurveda in India, USA & Japan. During 1985-88 he was the Head of the Institute of Research in Ayurvedic Medicine, Poona. During 1989 thru 2006, for 17 years, he was the Founder & Director of the AYU Ayurvedic Wellness Center - Academy, Clinic & Spa in Seattle, USA. These highly profitable businesses were purchased by a multinational company in 2006. During 1991-96, he was the Chairman of the Ayurvedic Medicine Department at the Bastyr University in Seattle, USA. His wife Gayathri, MS (USA) is a Nutrition & Diet Therapy consultant & a professor.
Since 2006, he is the Founder & Director of GAYA-THRI (Goa Ayurveda & Yoga Academy + Total Health Retreat, India). For his son-Omkar’s education, he resides in Goa and frequently travels to USA & Japan for business, clinical teaching and medical consultations. His expertise & experience is being used by various multinational businesses and institutions for promoting Ayurveda in India, USA & Japan. Currently, Dr. Shanbhag is a faculty member of Bastyr University in Seattle, USA and MMI College of Ayurveda, San Francisco, USA. He is also a Faculty Member & Advisor for Japan Ayurveda Association, Tokyo, Japan. He is the Chair of Govt. of India’s AYUSH’s Ayurveda Promotion & Propagation Working Group. He is the best-seller author of “Beginner’s Introduction to Ayurveda” by Keats Publishing. In 1988, he was awarded the prestigious I.I.M. Gold Medal for his MD (Ayu) Research Thesis. In 2008, International Academy of Ayurveda Physicians honored him with the Vishwa Ayurveda Ratna Award.
Dr. Shanbhag’s 16 years of education in Ayurveda, Naturopathic Medicine & Yoga includes 4 years ND at Bastyr University USA, 4 ½ years MD (Ayurved) at Poona University, 5 ½ years BAMS at Karnataka University and 2 years Certified Yoga Teacher Training at Karnataka University.

Gayathri Shanbhag, MS(USA) -is a consultant in Ayurvedic Nutrition & Diet Therapy. She graduated with a Masters in Nutrition from the Bastyr University, Seattle USA. From 1990-2006, for 16 years she taught at the AYU Ayurvedic Academy, Bastyr University & the Puget Consumer Co-Op - all in Seattle, USA. She specializes in Nutritional Therapy for metabolic diseases like obesity, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, menstrual disorders etc. Gayathri teaches Nutrition and Cooking courses at Goa Ayurveda & Yoga Academy.
